There are generally we refer two types of Cough. a dry cough and a wet cough. But these two distinct types of cough indicate different underlying conditions.

Dry cough

 “Dry cough” is called non-productive cough. It has a persistent itchy, or irritating sensation in the throat that results in coughing without producing mucus or phlegm.

 The responsible factors for dry-type cough are:- viral infections (common cold, flu), allergies, asthma, or irritants like smoke or pollutants.

Wet cough

“Wet cough”  is called productive cough, because it has always mucus or phlegm in the airways. 

It is due to respiratory infections, such as bronchitis or pneumonia. The wet cough generally expels excess mucus or foreign substances from the lungs.

Home remedies for dry cough:

  1. Honey: Honey is known for its soothing properties. Mix one to two teaspoons of honey in warm water or herbal tea and consume it to soothe the throat and reduce a dry cough. But keep in mind not to give honey to children under one year old.
  2. Steam Inhalation: This inhaling steam from a bowl of hot water is a common practice at the time of Covid 19. However, the same method can help here or a steamy shower can help relieve a dry cough by moisturizing the airways and soothing irritation.
  3. Warm Liquids: Drink warm liquids like herbal teas, warm water with honey and lemon, or broths to help soothe the throat and reduce a dry cough.
  4. Humidifier: Using a humidifier or vaporizer in your living space adds moisture to the air and helps alleviate dry cough caused by dry air.
  5. Throat Lozenges or Hard Candy: Sucking on throat lozenges or hard candy can help temporarily suppress dry cough and soothe the throat.

Remedies for wet cough:

 

  1. Guaifenesin: This easily available medical shop. This Over-the-counter expectorant containing guaifenesin helps maintain it thin and loosen mucus, therefore it is easier to cough up.
  2. Steam Inhalation: This help loosen mucus and facilitate its expulsion. Essential oils such as eucalyptus or peppermint if add can give faster relief.
  3. Hydration: Maintain hydration by drinking plenty of fluids, such as water, herbal teas, or warm broths, which help thin mucus and promote its elimination through coughing.
  4. Saltwater Gargle: Gargling with warm salt water helps reduce throat irritation and can stimulate the cough reflex to expel mucus.
  5. Elevating the Head: Sleeping with an elevated head position can help prevent mucus from pooling in the throat and reduce nighttime coughing.
  6. Avoid Irritants: Avoid exposure to smoke, pollutants, or strong fumes that can worsen coughing and irritate the airways.
  7. Honey and Lemon: Mix honey and lemon in warm water to create a soothing drink to help soothe the throat and relieve a wet cough.

It is worth mentioning that these  remedies provide temporary relief and but they should not replace medical advice.
